Intercultural Strategic Competences in the business context (English Version)

Introduction

For each presented case, you will have the possibility to choose between three different reactions to that particular situation. There will be a self-check option to find out whether you are using a rather ethno-centric strategy; whether you are taking up a culturally-minimising perspective or whether you are able to deal with intercultural conflicts in an ethno-relative way.

All of the 8 cases could occur to you in a work context. Please choose one of the strategies that appeals to you most and which you would most likely to choose in a real work situation. Please note, that there are no “right” or “wrong” answers here.

When you have chosen the answer that appeals to you most, please click on the corresponding small box on the right next to the case. You will be presented with one of three colours: turquoise, purple or yellow. Those colours refer to the three different strategies, which you can find in the legend on the bottom of the page.

You have two different possibilities for how you proceed:

1. You can write down which colours you got at how many times for your answers during the whole test. In the end of the test, you can then check which of the strategies you chose in how many cases.
OR
2. You can also scroll down to the legend after answering each question and check which strategy you chose in each of the cases.

If you are ready to start, please click on “Start with the Strategic Competences test” on the bottom right of the page in order to start with the test!

The different situations that could be problematic for you on an intercultural level were created in relation to the 8 different cultural dimensions that you might have read about in one of our other e-learning modules on AULIS already. As a reminder, the 8 different cultural dimensions that we are referring to are: Uncertainty Avoidance, Power Distance, Emotionality, Individualism, Structuring Time, Performance Orientation, Context Orientation and Rule Orientation.

Your answers will show which one of the three strategies you are using: An ethnocentric strategy, a minimalistic approach or an ethno-relative strategy. The three strategies refer to the intercultural competences that you also might have learned about in our other modules already: Interpretation Skills, Change of Perspective, Reframing, Intercultural Communication Skills, Meta-Communication, Conflict-Solving Skills, Listening Skills, Mediation Skills, Ambiguity Tolerance, Adaption and Reconciliation.
